I began my journey by getting a B.S. in psychology with a minor in child development. It was in those child development classes that I was introduced to Maria Montessori, her philosophy, and work with children who were deemed, at that time, to be unable to learn. I was fascinated to say the least, and it made so much sense. After graduation I taught children at the primary level (ages 3-6 years) in a Montessori school, then obtained my lower and upper elementary (ages 6-12 years) Montessori certifications and an M.Ed. I have worked in Montessori since 1993, then in 2023 I was introduced to Montessori Therapy. After 2 years of classes with many medical professionals, therapists, and Montessori therapists, a case study and oral defense, I obtained my Montessori therapy certification.
I was brought to Montessori therapy training by way of Catherine Massie’s company MMPI (Montessori Medical Partnership for Inclusion). It was like a bell went off in my head. As a Montessori teacher for the last 30+ years (primary, lower, and upper elementary), I had seen the struggle of some neurodivergent students, because I, the teacher, administration, and parents didn’t know how to meet their needs in the best possible way. I saw a need for a therapeutic practice that focused on using Montessori philosophy, the bio-psycho-social model of learning, and collaboration with other therapists, as well as everyone else involved in the child’s life to provide a holistic coming together of expertise, knowledge, care, and practice to ensure the success of every child. I saw the potential of all classrooms being more inclusive than they ever thought possible.
This created the idea of Kids in Clover. The phrase is quite an old agricultural term, except that instead of kids, it was used for livestock on the farm. When animals are said to be in clover, that means they are content and thriving. I thought what a great analogy. Kids who are happy and thriving….kids in clover! That is my wish for all children.
